If you've ever taken a pre-workout or a standalone Beta Alanine supplement and felt a weird prickling or tingling under your skin about fifteen minutes later, you're not imagining it and there's nothing wrong with you. That sensation has a name, paresthesia, and it's one of the most talked-about side effects in the supplement world, mostly because people assume it means the product is "working" in some dramatic way. The real story is a bit more mundane than that.
Beta alanine is an amino acid, and once you consume it, your body combines it with histidine to form carnosine, which gets stored in your muscles. Carnosine acts as a buffer against acid that builds up in muscle tissue during intense exercise. As you push hard, hydrogen ions accumulate and your muscle environment becomes more acidic, which is a big part of why your muscles start burning and losing power output during a tough set. Carnosine helps mop up some of that acid, delaying the point where fatigue really sets in.
The tingling itself is a separate, unrelated effect. Beta alanine seems to activate certain nerve receptors under the skin, causing that flushed, prickly feeling, particularly in the face, neck and hands. It's harmless and temporary, and it fades faster with smaller, split doses rather than one big hit. It doesn't tell you anything about how effective your dose is for performance, it's just a side effect of how the compound interacts with nerve receptors.
Where beta alanine actually earns its place is in high-intensity efforts lasting roughly one to four minutes, things like repeated sprints, circuit-style training, or sets that push you deep into that burning, acidic muscle feeling. That's the window where extra buffering capacity has the most chance to matter, since that's when acid buildup becomes the limiting factor.
Dosing matters more than most people realise. Studies generally use somewhere around 3 to 6 grams a day, and because carnosine builds up in muscle tissue gradually, the benefit comes from consistent daily use over several weeks rather than a single pre-workout dose on the day you train. Splitting the dose across the day helps minimise the tingles if they bother you.
The honest caveat is that beta alanine isn't going to do much for a max single lift, a short sprint under 60 seconds, or steady endurance efforts like a long run or ride, where acid buffering isn't the main limiter. It's a specific tool for a specific type of effort, not a blanket performance enhancer, and the tingles are just a curious side effect along for the ride, not a sign of anything working harder than it otherwise would.
