BCAA dominated the amino acid category for the better part of two decades. EAA has largely replaced it in informed use, and the reason comes down to a straightforward point about how protein is built.
What Each One Is
BCAA is three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are called branched-chain because of their molecular structure. All three are essential.
EAA is all nine essential amino acids, including those same three. Essential means the body cannot synthesise them and must get them from diet.
So BCAA is a subset of EAA. Every BCAA product contains three of the nine; every EAA product contains all nine.
The Argument for EAA
Building muscle protein requires all the amino acids that appear in that protein. If some are missing, the process is limited by whichever is in shortest supply, in the same way a production line is limited by its slowest station.
Leucine, the headline ingredient in BCAA, is strongly associated with signalling the start of protein synthesis. But signalling the start and having the material to complete it are two different things. Leucine can raise the signal; the other six essentials still need to be present for the work to proceed.
This is the central case for EAA, and it is why the field has moved.
Where BCAA Still Makes Sense
Being fair to it rather than dismissive.
Taste and mixability. BCAA is generally more palatable than EAA. Nine amino acids together is a harder flavour problem than three, and full-spectrum EAA has a bitterness that takes work to mask.
Cost per serve. Three ingredients cost less than nine.
Intra-workout sipping. If the purpose is a flavoured drink to sip during training, BCAA does that job at a lower price.
Formulating. If you are building a product where leucine content is the specification, BCAA at 4:1:1 gives you a higher leucine percentage per gram than an EAA blend.
2:1:1 vs 4:1:1
The numbers are the ratio of leucine to isoleucine to valine.
2:1:1 is the traditional ratio and the one most of the research used. It roughly reflects the proportions found in whole protein sources.
4:1:1 doubles the leucine share. The reasoning is that leucine drives the signalling, so more of it per gram is preferable.
If you want to match the research base, 2:1:1. If you specifically want leucine density, 4:1:1.
The Point Neither Side Mentions
Whey protein already contains all nine essential amino acids, and is high in leucine. If you are taking a whey shake around training, you are consuming a complete essential amino acid profile with the non-essentials alongside.
In that situation, adding EAA or BCAA on top is largely redundant. The clearer use cases for standalone aminos are training fasted, avoiding dairy, wanting a very low energy intra-workout drink, or formulating a product.
Saying this costs us a sale sometimes. It is still the accurate answer.

Full spectrum, best-supported choice - EAA.
Flavoured intra-workout drink on a budget - BCAA.
Already taking whey around training - probably neither.
