Why We Lab Test Our Protein

Every supplements label makes a promise: this many grams of protein, per serve, verified. The question is whether anyone actually checks that promise before the product reaches your kitchen bench.

Why is lab testing important?

In Australia, food safety and labelling are regulated by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), which sets the Food Standards Code covering nutrition panels, ingredient labelling and the claims brands are allowed to make. The rules are clear enough. What's less clear, in our experience running a supplements business for years, is how often those rules actually get checked once a product is on the shelf.

Most Australian supplement companies are legitimate and do the right thing. A smaller number aren't, and without routine enforcement, a label can say almost anything. So the real question for a customer isn't whether the law requires accurate labelling, it's how you know this particular tub matches what it says. The honest answer is: check the lab tests.

Why the numbers can move a little

Even with the best intentions, protein content can shift slightly between batches. Whey is a natural product, and the amount of protein in raw milk depends on things like the season and what the cattle are grazing on, along with where in the world it's sourced. That's normal, and it's exactly why testing needs to happen regularly rather than once, on a single sample, years ago.

Where we send our products

We send a cross-section of our range to ALS, a global testing group with laboratories based here in Australia. ALS is independently accredited by NATA, Australia's national laboratory accreditation body, and its Australian labs are trusted by food producers, safety regulators and pharmaceutical manufacturers for exactly this kind of quality and safety testing. Outside of supplements, ALS also works with pharmaceutical companies on drug development and quality control, work that demands a level of scientific scrutiny most industries never see. A lab trusted to help verify medicines is more than capable of accurately checking what's in a tub of protein powder.

How the testing actually works

ALS measures our protein content using the Kjeldahl method, the same nitrogen-based test used as the international standard for protein testing across the food industry. In simple terms, the lab breaks the sample down and measures its nitrogen content, then converts that figure into a protein percentage using a standard conversion factor. It's precise, it's reproducible, and it's the benchmark other protein tests are judged against.

It isn't a perfect method on its own though. Because it measures total nitrogen rather than protein directly, it can be tricked by anything high in nitrogen but low in actual protein, which is exactly what happened in the 2008 Chinese milk scandal, when melamine was added to dairy products to fake higher protein readings. It's part of why who does your testing matters as much as whether you test at all. An accredited, independently run lab with a reputation to protect, of the kind used for pharmaceutical testing, isn't the sort of operation that would let something like that slip through.

Having a product independently lab tested means you know what's actually in the bag, not just what the marketing says is in the bag.
