Electrolytes get talked about mostly in marketing, which has made them sound either essential to everyone or a gimmick. Neither is right. They are simply minerals that carry an electrical charge in solution, you lose them in sweat, and whether you need to replace them depends entirely on how much you sweat.
What They Actually Are
The main electrolytes are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. In solution they carry a charge, and that charge is what lets nerves fire and muscles contract. They also govern how fluid distributes between your bloodstream and your cells.
That last point is the one that matters practically. Drinking plain water after heavy sweating replaces the volume but dilutes what is left of the minerals, which is why very large volumes of plain water are not always the best answer to heavy fluid loss.
What Each One Does
Sodium is lost in the largest quantity through sweat and is the main driver of fluid retention and thirst. It is the one most people are actually short of after a hot session, and the one most often left out of home-made mixes.
Potassium works alongside sodium in nerve and muscle function. Lost in smaller amounts than sodium but still meaningfully.
Magnesium is involved in muscle contraction and relaxation. Sweat losses are small compared with sodium, but it is commonly included.
Calcium is central to the mechanism of muscle contraction itself. Sweat losses are minor.
Chloride accompanies sodium and generally comes along with it in the form of salt.
When You Actually Need Them
Being honest about this is more useful than selling everyone a tub.
Likely worth it: sessions over about an hour, training in heat or humidity, heavy sweaters, endurance events, physical outdoor work in an Australian summer, and situations with significant fluid loss.
Probably not needed: a 45 minute weights session in air conditioning. You will replace what you lost from your next meal. A normal diet supplies these minerals in quantity.
The honest summary is that electrolyte supplementation scales with sweat loss. If you finish a session with salt visible on your skin and your shirt soaked, it is worth it. If you barely broke a sweat, it is not.
Signs of Heavy Loss
Cramping late in a session, unusual fatigue disproportionate to the work, and a persistent craving for salty food after training are the common markers. These are general observations rather than diagnostic, and there are other explanations for all of them, including simply being underfed or undertrained for the session.
Blend or Build Your Own
A ready blend is the sensible default. Ratios are set, it dissolves, and it tastes like something you will actually drink. Ours is orange flavoured and mixes into water without clumping.

Building your own makes sense in two situations: you want control over the ratios, particularly the sodium level which most commercial products keep low for taste reasons, or you are formulating a product and buying ingredients at volume.
The usual base is sodium, potassium and magnesium. Potassium gluconate is the milder-tasting potassium source and the one generally used in drink formulas rather than the harsher chloride. Magnesium glycinate or magnesium L-aspartate covers the magnesium, and calcium citrate if you want calcium in the mix.
Practical Notes
- Sip through a session rather than drinking a large volume at once. Absorption is better and it sits more comfortably.
- A small amount of carbohydrate alongside improves sodium and water uptake, which is why sports drinks contain sugar rather than purely for energy.
- Very high sodium mixes taste unpleasant. If you are building your own, expect to adjust more than once.
- More is not better. These are minerals with an upper limit, not a supplement to load.
