Walk into any supplement shop and you will find magnesium sold in half a dozen forms at wildly different prices. The label rarely explains the difference, and the difference is real: the compound magnesium is bound to changes how much you absorb, how it sits in the stomach, and how much powder you need for the same dose.

Why Magnesium Is Never Sold Alone
Elemental magnesium is a reactive metal. In a supplement it is always bound to a carrier, and that carrier is what the form name refers to. Glycinate means bound to glycine. Aspartate means bound to aspartic acid.
Two consequences follow. First, elemental content varies: a gram of one form contains a different amount of actual magnesium than a gram of another. Second, the carrier itself is not inert, and in some cases it does something you may actively want.

Magnesium Glycinate
Glycinate is the form most often chosen where digestive tolerance is the priority. The salt forms of magnesium, particularly oxide and citrate, are known for a laxative effect at higher doses. Chelated forms like glycinate are generally gentler.
The carrier is worth noting on its own account. Glycine is an amino acid used in its own right in relaxation and sleep formulas, which is part of why magnesium glycinate has become the default recommendation for evening use.
The trade-off is elemental content. Glycine is a relatively large molecule, so a gram of magnesium glycinate contains less actual magnesium than a gram of a salt form. Serving sizes are correspondingly larger.

Magnesium L-Aspartate
Magnesium bound to aspartic acid. This form has a long history in sports nutrition and is the one you will most often find in products aimed at training rather than sleep.
It carries more elemental magnesium per gram than glycinate, so servings are smaller by weight for the same delivered dose.

ZMA
ZMA is zinc and magnesium in aspartate form, conventionally with vitamin B6. It has been a fixture of night-time supplement stacks since the late 1990s.
The case for it is convenience rather than any magic in the combination: zinc and magnesium are two minerals athletes commonly supplement, and taking them together in one measured dose is simpler than weighing both.
One practical note: zinc and calcium compete for absorption, so ZMA is conventionally taken away from dairy and calcium supplements.
Which to Choose
If digestive tolerance is your main concern - glycinate.
If you are taking it in the evening - glycinate, since the glycine carrier suits that use.
If you want the smallest serving by weight - L-aspartate.
If you want zinc as well and prefer one product - ZMA.
If you are formulating a product - work from elemental magnesium content per gram rather than the gross weight, or your label will not say what you think it says.
Timing and Practical Use
Magnesium powders dissolve reasonably well in water but the taste varies by form. Mixing into a flavoured drink, a protein shake or juice is the usual approach.
There is no strong reason to take magnesium at a particular time of day for its own sake. The evening convention comes from the sleep associations of the glycine carrier rather than from the magnesium.
