General Supplement Basics

Do supplements actually work?
Supplements can help fill genuine gaps in your diet or support specific goals like recovery or convenience, but their effectiveness depends on the ingredient, the dose and your overall diet and training. They work best alongside good nutrition, not instead of it.
Are supplements safe to take every day?
Most sports supplements and vitamins are designed for daily use when taken at the label-recommended serving. As with any product, check the specific dosage guidance on the pack and speak with your doctor if you're pregnant, on medication or managing a health condition.
Can you take too many supplements?
Yes. Taking more than the recommended serving, or combining several products with overlapping ingredients, can push your intake of a nutrient higher than intended. Always follow the label directions and check for overlapping ingredients if you're using multiple products together.
What supplements should I take daily?
That depends entirely on your diet, training and goals, so there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Many people start with a high-quality protein source, and add products like creatine, a multivitamin or omega-3s based on what their diet is missing.
Do I need supplements if I eat healthy?
If your diet already meets your nutrient and protein needs, supplements are optional rather than essential. Many people still use them for convenience, or to make it easier to hit specific targets (like daily protein) that would otherwise take a lot of food prep.
What's the difference between vitamins and supplements?
Vitamins are one type of nutrient your body needs in small amounts (like Vitamin C or D). "Supplements" is the broader category that includes vitamins, minerals, amino acids, protein powders and other ingredients sold to top up your diet.
Are supplements FDA/TGA approved?
In Australia, most sports and nutritional supplements are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as "listed" complementary medicines or as foods, depending on the product. Being TGA-listed means the product meets safety and quality requirements, though it isn't the same as TGA-evaluated proof of the specific health claims.
Do supplements expire?
Yes. Powders, capsules and tablets all have a best-before or expiry date on the packaging. Using a product well past this date isn't recommended, as ingredient potency (and in some cases safety) can decline over time.
Can supplements interact with medication?
Some can, particularly minerals, amino acids and anything marketed for weight management or sleep. If you're on prescription medication, it's worth checking with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a new supplement to your routine.
What supplements are worth taking?
The ones worth taking are the ones that match an actual gap in your diet or a specific goal, rather than whatever is trending. Protein, creatine and a basic multivitamin are among the most well-studied and widely used starting points.

Protein & Whey

How much protein powder should I take a day?
Most people use one to two servings a day (typically 20-30g of protein each) on top of protein from food, depending on bodyweight, training volume and goals. Check the nutrition panel on your specific product for the exact protein content per serve.
Is whey protein bad for you?
For most healthy adults, whey protein is a well-tolerated way to increase protein intake. People with a dairy allergy or lactose intolerance may prefer a whey isolate (lower in lactose) or a plant-based protein instead.
What's the difference between whey isolate and whey concentrate?
Whey isolate goes through extra filtration to remove more fat, carbohydrate and lactose, giving a higher protein percentage per scoop. Whey concentrate retains slightly more natural nutrients and a creamier taste, and is usually more budget-friendly.
Does protein powder help you lose weight?
Protein powder isn't a weight-loss product on its own, but higher protein intake can support satiety and help preserve muscle while in a calorie deficit. Weight loss ultimately comes down to your overall calorie balance.
When is the best time to drink protein shake?
Many people have a shake within an hour or two after training to support recovery, though total daily protein intake matters more than exact timing. Others use it at breakfast or between meals simply for convenience.
Can you drink protein powder without working out?
Yes. Protein powder is simply a convenient protein source, so it can be used by anyone looking to increase their protein intake, not only people who train.
Is plant-based protein as good as whey?
Plant proteins (like pea or rice-based blends) can provide a good amino acid profile, especially when blended from more than one source, though whey is naturally a "complete" protein containing all nine essential amino acids in generous amounts. Choose based on dietary preference, allergies and taste.
Does protein powder cause bloating?
Bloating is most often caused by lactose (in whey concentrate) or by drinking a shake too quickly. Switching to a whey isolate or a plant-based protein, or mixing more slowly, often resolves it.

Creatine

What does creatine do?
Creatine helps regenerate ATP, your muscles' primary energy source for short, high-intensity efforts like lifting and sprinting. This can support strength, power and training performance over time.
Is creatine safe for beginners?
Yes, creatine monohydrate is one of the most researched sports supplements available and is considered safe for healthy adults at the standard 3-5g daily dose, including beginners.
Do you need to cycle creatine?
No, cycling isn't necessary. Taking a consistent 3-5g daily dose is the standard, well-supported approach, and there's no need for a loading phase or breaks unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
Does creatine cause weight gain?
Creatine can cause a small increase in water retention within the muscle cells in the first week or two, which shows up as a minor scale-weight increase. This is water, not fat gain.
What's the best time to take creatine?
Any time of day works, since creatine builds up in your muscles over time rather than acting immediately. Many people take it around their workout simply as a routine, or with a meal for consistency.
Is creatine safe for women?
Yes, the research on creatine safety and benefits applies equally to women and men. There's no reason for women to avoid it based on sex alone.
Does creatine affect kidneys?
In healthy individuals, creatine at standard doses has not been shown to harm kidney function in the research to date. People with pre-existing kidney disease should speak with their doctor before using it.

Pre-Workout

Is pre-workout bad for your heart?
The main concern is usually caffeine content, especially in higher-stimulant formulas or when combined with other caffeine sources. People with heart conditions or high blood pressure should check with their doctor before using a pre-workout.
What does pre-workout do?
Pre-workout blends typically combine caffeine and other ingredients (like beta-alanine or citrulline) to support energy, focus and training performance before a session.
Can you take pre-workout every day?
Many people do, but daily use of a high-caffeine pre-workout can lead to increased tolerance and affect sleep if taken later in the day. It's worth checking your total daily caffeine intake from all sources.
What's the best pre-workout for beginners?
Beginners are often better starting with a lower-caffeine or half-serving option to assess tolerance before working up to a full serving.
Does pre-workout have caffeine?
Most pre-workouts do, though the amount varies significantly between products and brands. Always check the label for the exact caffeine content per serving.
Can you take pre-workout without exercising?
It's designed and dosed for use before exercise, so taking it without training just delivers a caffeine/stimulant hit without the activity it's intended to support. It's not recommended as a general energy drink replacement.

Vitamins & Minerals

What vitamins should I take daily?
This depends on your diet, age, and any specific gaps you have. A general multivitamin is a common starting point, with individual nutrients like Vitamin D, magnesium or iron added if a gap is identified.
Is vitamin D deficiency common in Australia?
Vitamin D deficiency is fairly common in Australia, especially for people with limited sun exposure, those who cover up for work or cultural reasons, and people in southern states during winter. A blood test through your doctor is the most reliable way to check your own levels.
What are the benefits of vitamin C?
Vitamin C supports normal immune function and acts as an antioxidant, and it's also involved in collagen formation and iron absorption.
Can you take too much vitamin D?
Yes, Vitamin D is fat-soluble and can build up in the body, so very high doses over a long period can lead to toxicity. Stick to the recommended daily amount unless a doctor has advised otherwise based on a blood test.
What is zinc good for?
Zinc supports normal immune function, wound healing and protein synthesis, among other roles in the body.
Should I take vitamins in the morning or at night?
Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) are best taken with a meal containing some fat, at whatever time of day suits your routine. There's generally no strict rule on morning versus night for most vitamins - consistency matters more than exact timing.
What vitamins help with energy and tiredness?
B-group vitamins, iron and Vitamin D are commonly linked to energy levels, but persistent tiredness can have many causes. If it's ongoing, it's worth getting it checked by your doctor rather than guessing with supplements.
Do vitamin gummies work as well as pills?
Gummies can deliver similar nutrients to tablets, though they sometimes contain lower doses or added sugar. Check the nutrition panel to compare the actual nutrient content, not just the format.

Weight Loss & Fat Burners

Do fat burners actually work?
Most fat burner ingredients (like caffeine or green tea extract) offer a modest boost to metabolism or energy expenditure at best. They work best as a small addition to an existing calorie deficit and training routine, not as a standalone solution.
Are fat burners safe?
Most contain stimulants like caffeine, so people with heart conditions, high blood pressure, anxiety or caffeine sensitivity should be cautious and check with their doctor first. Always follow the labelled serving size.
What is the best supplement for weight loss?
There's no single "best" supplement for weight loss - sustainable results come from a calorie deficit, adequate protein and regular activity. Supplements like protein powder can support that process, but they don't replace it.
Do appetite suppressants work?
Some ingredients (like fibre or certain plant extracts) may help with feelings of fullness, but effects vary a lot between people and products. They're best viewed as a minor support tool rather than a primary weight-loss strategy.
Can supplements replace diet and exercise?
No. Supplements are designed to complement a balanced diet and active lifestyle, not substitute for either one.
What is CLA and does it help you lose weight?
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a fatty acid that's been studied for a possible small effect on body composition, though results in research are mixed and modest at best. It works as a minor addition to diet and training, not a solution on its own.

Collagen

Does collagen actually work for skin?
Some studies suggest collagen peptide supplementation may support skin elasticity and hydration over consistent, longer-term use, though individual results vary and research is still developing.
What is the best time to take collagen?
There's no strict best time - many people take it in coffee, a shake or water at whatever point fits their daily routine, since consistency matters more than timing.
Is marine collagen better than bovine collagen?
Neither is universally "better" - marine collagen is sourced from fish and is often preferred by people avoiding bovine (cow) products, while bovine collagen is a well-studied, cost-effective option. Both are hydrolysed into similar peptide sizes for absorption.
How long does it take for collagen to work?
Most collagen research uses consistent daily use over 8-12 weeks or longer before assessing changes in skin or joint measures, so it's a longer-term addition rather than a quick fix.
Can you take collagen and protein powder together?
Yes, they serve different purposes - collagen is not a complete protein (it's missing some essential amino acids), so many people use both: whey or plant protein for muscle-building needs, and collagen alongside it for its specific peptide profile.
Does collagen help with joint pain?
Some research points to a possible benefit for joint comfort with consistent long-term use, particularly in active individuals, though it isn't a treatment for underlying joint conditions. See your doctor for ongoing joint pain.

Omega-3 & Fish Oil

What are the benefits of fish oil?
Fish oil provides omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which support normal heart and brain function as part of a balanced diet.
How much fish oil should I take a day?
This varies by product concentration, so check the label for the actual EPA/DHA content per serving rather than just the capsule count, and follow the recommended daily serving.
Is it safe to take fish oil every day?
Yes, fish oil is commonly used daily by healthy adults. People on blood-thinning medication should check with their doctor first, as high doses of omega-3s can affect blood clotting.
What's the difference between fish oil and omega-3?
Omega-3 is the family of fatty acids (including EPA and DHA); fish oil is simply one common source of those omega-3s. Omega-3 can also come from algae oil, flaxseed and other sources.
Can fish oil cause fishy burps and how do I stop it?
Yes, this is a common and harmless side effect. Taking fish oil with a meal, choosing an enteric-coated capsule, or keeping capsules in the freezer can all help reduce it.

Probiotics & Gut Health

What do probiotics actually do?
Probiotics are live microorganisms that may help support a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which is linked to digestion and general gut comfort.
What is the best probiotic for bloating?
Strains and formulations vary widely, and what works best can be quite individual, so it often takes some trial to find a product that suits you. If bloating is persistent or severe, see your doctor to rule out other causes.
Do you need to refrigerate probiotics?
Some do, some don't - it depends on the specific strains and formulation, so always check the storage instructions on your product's packaging.
How long does it take for probiotics to work?
Many people trial a probiotic for at least 2-4 weeks of consistent daily use before assessing whether it's making a noticeable difference.
Can probiotics help with weight loss?
Some emerging research links certain gut bacteria to metabolism and weight, but the evidence for probiotics directly causing weight loss is still limited and not a reason to use them as a primary weight-loss strategy.

Magnesium

What is magnesium good for?
Magnesium supports normal muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism, and electrolyte balance, among other roles in the body.
Does magnesium help you sleep?
Some people find magnesium, particularly forms like glycinate, supportive for winding down in the evening, though individual results vary and it isn't a proven sleep treatment on its own.
What type of magnesium is best (glycinate vs citrate)?
Magnesium glycinate is often chosen for being gentle on the stomach and well-absorbed, while magnesium citrate is also well-absorbed but can have a mild laxative effect at higher doses. The best choice depends on your goal and tolerance.
Can you take magnesium every night?
Yes, magnesium is commonly used as a daily evening supplement by healthy adults at the standard labelled dose.
Does magnesium help with anxiety and stress?
Magnesium plays a role in normal nervous system function, and some people report a calming effect, but it isn't a treatment for anxiety or stress disorders. Speak with your doctor if stress or anxiety is significantly affecting your life.

Multivitamins

Are multivitamins worth it?
They're most useful for people whose diet has genuine gaps, rather than a strict requirement for everyone. If you eat a varied, balanced diet, a multivitamin is more of an insurance policy than a necessity.
What's the best multivitamin for men?
Look for one formulated for your age group and activity level, without unnecessary iron if your diet already provides enough (unless a doctor advises otherwise).
What's the best multivitamin for women?
Formulas for women often include added iron and folate to reflect typical dietary needs, though individual requirements vary, especially around pregnancy - always check with your doctor in that case.
Can you take a multivitamin and other supplements together?
Generally yes, but check for overlapping ingredients (like Vitamin D or zinc appearing in multiple products) so you don't unintentionally exceed the recommended daily amount.
Do multivitamins expire and lose potency?
Yes, like all supplements they have a best-before or expiry date, and nutrient potency can decline over time, especially once opened and exposed to air, heat or moisture.

Timing & Dosage

Should supplements be taken with food or on an empty stomach?
This varies by product - fat-soluble vitamins are better absorbed with some dietary fat, while some amino acids are often taken on an empty stomach. Check the specific product's label or its FAQ page above for guidance.
What supplements should not be taken together?
The main thing to watch for is overlapping ingredients (for example, several products all containing Vitamin D or zinc), which can add up to more than intended. If you're combining multiple products or take medication, it's worth checking with a pharmacist.
Is it better to take supplements in the morning or evening?
For most products, either works - what matters most is consistency. Some, like magnesium, are more commonly taken in the evening simply because of their calming reputation.
How long before you see results from supplements?
This varies enormously by supplement and goal: creatine effects build over roughly 2-4 weeks, collagen and joint-support ingredients are typically assessed over 8-12+ weeks, while a protein shake's effect on daily protein intake is immediate. Set realistic, product-specific expectations.
Can you take supplements on an empty stomach?
Some are fine on an empty stomach (like BCAAs or creatine), while others - particularly anything that can cause stomach upset, like fish oil or higher-dose vitamin C - are usually better taken with food.
Do you need to take rest days from supplements?
For most everyday supplements (protein, creatine, multivitamins, magnesium), there's no need for rest days - consistent daily use is the standard approach. Stimulant-based products like pre-workout are the main exception, where regular breaks can help manage tolerance.
