What's Actually in Our Flavouring

What's Actually in Our Flavouring

"Natural flavours" is one of those phrases that turns up on almost every label and tells you very little. So here's what it means on ours, and what else goes into a flavoured bag of Pure Product whey.

What's in Pure Product Australia flavoured whey?

Our flavoured Whey Protein Isolate has four ingredients on the label:

  1. Whey protein isolate
  2. Natural flavours
  3. Natural sweetener (steviol, from stevia)
  4. Lecithin, at a very small percentage

The flavoured WPC + WPI Blend is the same, with a mix of concentrate and isolate as the protein. You can read the full panels on our WPI nutrition information page.

All of our flavoured supplements are naturally flavoured and naturally sweetened. No artificial sweeteners, no artificial colours, and no gums or thickeners.

What does "natural flavours" actually mean?

It means the flavouring comes from natural sources rather than being made synthetically. Our chocolate flavours use real cocoa.

If you'd like to flavour protein yourself, we also sell natural flavour powders and cocoa on their own: Natural Vanilla Flavour Powder, Strawberry Natural Flavour Powder, Banana Natural Flavour Powder and Unsweetened Cocoa Powder. Lab results for several of them are on our lab test results page.

Why do you use stevia?

Stevia is a plant-based sweetener, and it fits how we want our flavoured products to read: short label, natural ingredients. It's also very sweet, so only a small amount is needed.

Stevia does have its own character, and some people find it a little different from sugar. If you'd rather sweeten your own way, buy unflavoured and add stevia, monk fruit or allulose to taste. The whole range is under natural sweeteners.

What is the lecithin for?

We use a tiny amount of sunflower lecithin to help the powder mix into liquid. It isn't a thickener, and it isn't there for flavour. It's in our unflavoured whey as well.

Which flavours are available?

Our WPI comes in Vanilla, Chocolate, Cookies & Cream, Strawberry, Banana and Unflavoured. Can't decide? Choose "Mix" at checkout and tell us which flavours you want in the cart note field.

One thing worth knowing: our Cookies & Cream flavour contains gluten. Our whey also contains milk and sunflower lecithin, so please check the allergen information on each product page before you buy.

Why does flavoured whey sometimes taste different between bags?

Because we keep the flavouring light, you can taste the whey underneath it, and whey shifts a little with the seasons. Cocoa is a crop as well, so chocolate can vary between lots. We explain it properly in why whey protein can taste a little different sometimes.

Should I buy flavoured or unflavoured?

Flavoured is easiest if you mostly drink your protein with water or milk and want it ready to go.

Unflavoured makes more sense if you:

  • bake or cook with protein, where a sweetener or flavour can clash with the recipe
  • add protein to smoothies that already have plenty of flavour
  • want full control over sweetness
  • want the most consistent taste from bag to bag

Browse the unflavoured protein range, or pair it with a natural flavour powder and make your own.
