Why Our WPI Comes From New Zealand and Our WPC From Australia

Why Our WPI Comes From New Zealand and Our WPC From Australia

Read the labels across our whey range and you'll notice something. Our isolate says New Zealand. Our concentrate says Australia. People sometimes ask whether that's a mistake, so here's the straight answer about where our protein comes from.

Where does Pure Product Australia's whey come from?

All of our whey comes from grass-fed cows in Australia and New Zealand. Nothing comes from unknown origins.

So both labels are right. They're different ingredients, and we source each one separately.

Why isn't all of it from the same place?

Isolate and concentrate aren't the same ingredient. Both start as whey, but isolate goes through extra filtration to strip out most of the fat and lactose, which is why it ends up higher in protein and lower in carbs. We've written about that process in how cross-flow microfiltration makes WPI purer.

Because they're made differently, they're bought as two separate raw materials, and we choose the supply for each one on its own merits. For our isolate that's New Zealand grass-fed whey. For our concentrate it's Australian grass-fed dairy.

What does "grass-fed" mean here?

It means the milk comes from cows raised on pasture rather than finished on grain in a feedlot. Both Australia and New Zealand have long histories of pasture-based dairy farming. Our article on the benefits of grass-fed protein covers why people look for it.

One honest side effect: pasture changes with the seasons, and so does the milk. That's why a bag can taste a touch different from the last one, which we explain in why whey protein can taste a little different sometimes.

Is the product made in Australia?

Yes. The whey is the raw ingredient. We formulate and pack our finished products here in Australia, and our team is based in Minto, NSW. We've been doing it since 2014.

Where do your other proteins come from?

We apply the same thinking across the range and pick each ingredient by source. Our collagen is German-made, and our pea protein is Canadian-sourced. You'll find the full range under protein powder and collagen.

Why does the source matter?

Two reasons. First, origin affects what ends up in the powder, including trace contaminants. We looked at that in heavy metals in protein powders and why Australian and New Zealand protein leads in purity.

Second, a source is only a claim until someone checks it. We send our products to ALS, a NATA-accredited laboratory in Australia, and publish the results. You can check the latest for WPI, WPC and the blend, or read what we test for beyond protein.

Which one should I choose?

That depends on what you want from your protein rather than where it's from:

  • Choose isolate if you want the most protein per serve, the fewest carbs and fat, or you're sensitive to lactose. See does WPI contain lactose?
  • Choose concentrate for a creamier shake and better value per gram of protein.
  • Choose the blend if you want something in between.
