If pre-workout is mostly caffeine, why not just have a strong coffee before the gym? It's a fair question, and for some people, coffee genuinely does the job. But the two aren't quite interchangeable.

What they have in common

Both coffee and pre-workout rely on caffeine as the main driver of that ready-to-train feeling: more alertness, better focus, and often a bit more tolerance for pushing through a hard set. A double-shot flat white and a 10g serve of our Pre-Workout deliver a broadly similar caffeine hit, somewhere around 180-200mg.

Where they differ

Coffee is caffeine and not much else. Pre-workout is usually built around caffeine plus a handful of ingredients chosen specifically for training. Ours pairs caffeine with beta-alanine, which supports muscular endurance during high-intensity efforts, AAKG for blood flow, and N-acetyl-tyrosine to help support focus late in a session. Coffee doesn't touch any of that.

There's also the dosing. Coffee's caffeine content swings depending on the beans, the roast and how it's brewed. An espresso and a plunger coffee made from the same beans can vary by 50mg or more. A pre-workout serve is measured and printed on the label, so you know exactly what you're getting every time.

When coffee is the better call

If you're doing a light session, a walk, mobility work, an easy cardio day, coffee is probably all you need, and there's no reason to spend extra on pre-workout for a low-intensity day. It's also just easier: you likely already have it in the cupboard.

When pre-workout makes more sense

For heavier lifting days, high-intensity intervals, or any session where you're chasing a personal best, the extra ingredients in a proper pre-workout formula start to earn their keep. If you want the training-specific ingredients without guessing your dose from a home-brewed cup, that's what a formula like our Pre-Workout or the grab-and-go Pre-Workout Ready to Drink can is built for.
